Threeways Shipping and Roofings Uganda Nurture Green Hope in Hoima

In the oil-rich town of Hoima, a group of company staff, local leaders and community members gathered for a different kind of workday — to plant and distribute trees.

The tree distribution exercise was organised by Threeways Shipping Services (Group) Ltd in partnership with Roofings Uganda Ltd. The activity is part of a growing partnership between the two companies aimed at promoting environmental conservation and community engagement.

A partnership with purpose

The exercise, led by Mr. Oscar Baitwa, the Director and Founder of Threeways Shipping, focused on giving back to the community through tree planting.

This collaboration follows an earlier visit to Roofings Group’s headquarters in Kampala, where both companies explored opportunities for strategic partnership. During that meeting, the leadership teams discussed their shared commitment to sustainable business practices and community development — values that have now taken root in Hoima’s soil.

Threeways Shipping, a well-known logistics and transport company serving Uganda’s oil and gas sector, teamed up with Roofings Uganda to support tree planting as a way of restoring green cover and creating awareness about environmental care.

“Planting trees is not just a one-day event. It’s about investing in the future — for our children and for the communities where we work,” said Mr. Baitwa during the event.

The partnership brings together Threeways’ expertise in the oil and gas logistics sector with Roofings Group’s established commitment to environmental stewardship, creating a model for how businesses can drive positive change beyond their core operations.

Community and staff come together

Several staff members from Threeways joined the initiative, including Mr. William Wardria (Manager of Facilities, Oil & Gas and Maintenance), Mr. Morris Komakech (Human Resource Business Partner), Ms. Elizabeth Akumu (Asset and Fleet Monitoring), Mr. Benny Baitwa (Fleet Inspector) and Mr. Emma Saroon Georgie (Head of Security).

Their participation reflected the company’s belief that environmental protection should be part of every department’s responsibility — not only the management’s.

Excitement filled the air as residents received seedlings and took part in the exercise. The event was rounded off with songs, cheers and a show of teamwork between the company and the local community.

Why the tree planting matters

Hoima, now known as the heart of Uganda’s oil and gas industry, faces rapid growth and environmental change. As new infrastructure and industries expand, activities like this help balance development with sustainability.

Tree planting helps fight soil erosion, improves air quality and restores natural beauty to areas affected by industrial activity. For companies like Threeways Shipping and Roofings Uganda, it also demonstrates that business success and environmental care can go hand in hand.

Both organizations recognize that operating in resource-rich regions comes with a responsibility to preserve the environment for future generations. This shared vision was central to their initial discussions and has now manifested in tangible community action.

A growing culture of responsibility

This partnership between Threeways Shipping and Roofings Uganda is part of a broader effort to promote green habits across Uganda’s private sector. Roofings Group has long been known for encouraging tree planting and environmental awareness through various initiatives, while Threeways continues to integrate sustainability into its logistics operations.

The collaboration exemplifies how strategic business relationships can extend beyond commercial interests to create meaningful social and environmental impact.

“This initiative is proof that our businesses can contribute to a cleaner, greener Uganda,” said one of the company representatives at the event.

Looking ahead

The companies plan to continue working with communities around their operational areas to ensure the distributed trees are cared for and grown to maturity. Both Threeways and Roofings see this tree planting exercise as the first of many joint initiatives that will strengthen their partnership while benefiting the communities they serve.

As one local leader noted, “When these trees grow, they’ll tell a story — that even in the middle of an oil region, we chose to plant life.”

The collaboration between Threeways Shipping Services and Roofings Uganda demonstrates that when businesses unite around shared values, they can plant seeds of change that extend far beyond the boardroom — reaching into the soil, the community and the future of Uganda’s environment.
